bunker is an architecture and research studio based in Milan
This project, developed as part of the PhD program in Architectural Composition at IUAV University of Venice (and proposed by I.VE.), explores the city's edge facing the lagoon.
The concept of creating a new, autonomous island contrasts with the idea of simply redeveloping the abandoned area in Cannaregio Ovest for residential use. Based on a Palladian prototype of a Venetian house, the design proposes a compact yet low-rise (three-story) fabric of double-height studios, alternating between private and public courtyards topped by linear housing units. By reworking the tripartite layout of the Venetian palazzo, the project suggests that subtle expansions in the width of the calli can intensify spatial relationships. A device studied in section allows the studio skylights on the ground floor to break the line of sight between facing units on the second floor, dictating the rhythm of the roofs, which are lined with photovoltaic panels.
